The Abbey

The Abbey of Eskirotz and Ilarratz is situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees directly on the Camino de Santiago between the village of Zubiri and Pamplona.

It is being restored so that it may offer support to pilgrims walking the Camino.

History

The building is thought to have its origins in the 12th century. Some believe it might have been a Templar fort. The building was extensively renovated in the 16th century.

Architecture

The building has many unique features - an entrance door of stars, a mid 13c hand painted altar, 16c domed ceilings and a portion of the original Camino de Santiago that runs through its garden.
